Indian Financial System Code or IFSC is an alpha-numeric code that uniquely identifies a bank-branch for digital payment transactions. It is managed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). It is an eleven characters code with the first four characters representing the bank, the fifth character is default "0" (zero) left for future use, and the last six characters representing the branch.

IFSC is used by various payment systems like National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT), Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS), Immediate Payment Service, an interbank electronic instant mobile linked money transfer service (IMPS), National Settlement System (NSS), and Centralised Funds Management System (CFMS) to identify the originating / destination banks / branches and also to route the messages appropriately to the concerned banks / branches.

MICR is an acronym for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition. The MICR Code is a numeric code that uniquely identifies a bank-branch participating in the Electronic Clearing Services (ECS) Credit scheme or processing of cheques/negotiable instruments. It is a 9 digit code to identify the location of the bank branch, the first three characters represent the city, the next three represent the bank and the last three represent the branch. The MICR Code allotted to a bank branch is printed on the MICR band of cheques issued by bank branches.
